Dawn of the Empire

Through the Portal
Session Twelve

The daimyo, Kanna, Ikuchi, Kikuchi, Saito, Hideo, and Omori prepare to enter the portal.
The portal is located in a room within the mines that were found when the sinkhole formed. In the middle of the portal room there is a circular hole on the floor and ceiling.
Kanna throws a rock into both the floor and ceiling holes. The rock thrown into the ceiling didn’t fall back out.
Omori communes with the kami to find out which is the portal. Of course, the kami reply with the obscure answers of “The portal is behind the wall that is not a wall” and “To get there take two steps forward and one step back.” Hideo notices that there is wind blowing between the two holes. He ties a rope around his waist and takes two steps forward which causes him to fall into the hole in the floor. Omori pulls the rope back, but it has been cut. Thinking that he must be correct that that is the portal, she gathers Hideo’s possessions and follows after him.
Kanna is hesitant on jumping into a seemingly endless pit. She takes a moment to walk around the pit. She gets lucky and notices that if she looks at the door to the room through the wall of wind created between the pits it looks like there is a hole there. The hole disappears when she looks at the doorway on the other side. She turns around and steps backwards through the door and disappears. The rest of the people do the same.
Hideo and Omori find themselves falling through fog. Hideo sees they are falling quickly towards floating land masses. They both see holes that go through the land masses. They manage to dodge through them. The holes end up causing them to fall back up the way they came. They find themselves back in the portal room. They both think that they are now in a new Rokugan. But when they ask the guards outside the room they find out they are back where they started. Omori finally figures out walking backwards through the door is the solution. She doesn’t say anything to Hideo before entering and Hideo is stuck. Not knowing what to do Hideo drinks some of his alcohol. A bit drunk, he sits down and leans his back against the door causing him to fall through portal.
In the meantime, the rest find themselves now walking forward through a white hall lined with sliding doors. The eyeless Saito points to a closed door and says that it is open. There is a bright white light when the door is opened. Everyone finds themselves in a large clearing when they step through the door. This is the same area that Frog’s Crossing was built on, but different. Nearby is a tall castle built out of obsidian. Kikuchi and Saito sit down and make a small camp.
The rest of the group heads towards the castle. There is a man sitting on the front steps of the main gate smoking a pipe. Kanna feels like she knows the man, but can’t remember who he is and why she knows him. The man’s mon is a grey wolf on a red background. The daimyo talks with him. He says the castle is the center of Wolf Clan lands that daimyo Hideki watches over. The Scorpion have moved north near Kirin lands. The man is the Minister of Finance, Gen Ayame. There are obsidian mines in the nearby mountains which is where the obsidian for the castle comes from.
He leads us into into an ornate entry hall. Kanna finds out that her father is still alive in this Rokugan and that he is helping out Ryoshun, the tenth kami, and her sensei, Souji, is a military leader helping the Crab.
Omori appears in the clearing. Shortly after Hideo shows up. The real daimyo Hideo goes out to retrieve them. Omori opts to stay behind with Kikuchi and Saito.
Everyone goes to sleep, but is awakened to deep rapid drum beats of an alarm. Kanna and Hideo ready themselves and head to their daimyo to make sure he is alright. They find out that oni are attacking and that it is a regular occurrence in this Rokugan.
Omori wakes up and sees the oni heading towards the castle. She sees that Kikuchi and Saito have already gotten to the castle walls and are being pulled up to safety. She follows them and just barely gets up the wall before the oni arrive. She is immediately employed into service, helping to defend the castle and heal the injured. The battle goes throughout the night, but the oni are finally driven off.
Kanna’s father, her sensei, Ryoshun, and the alternate daimyo Hideki, who has an eyepatch, are all present for breakfast the next day. Afterwards, the real daimyo, the alternate daimyo, and Ryoshun head off to talk.
The real daimyo Hideki explains how he and his party arrived here and the whole situation. It is explained to him that obsidian just isn’t cursed here, the crazy lady came to this Rokugan also looking for a map that isn’t a map, that the Scorpion are now stewards for Kirin lands, and the Kitsune have been driven south by the Lion.
Meanwhile, Kanna speaks lightly with her father and Hideo plays a game against Souji. Hideo hears about an artifact in Kirin lands.
Everyone heads to bed. They awaken and find that they are in the white hallway again. Saito now says that another door is open. Kanna finds that there are two extra scrolls in her bag. The daimyo finds an extra scroll in his.
Everyone proceeds to walk through the next open door. Everyone finds themselves on a dirt path that leads to a hut. The hut and its surrounding area are the only untouched thing within a ruined town that has been scorched to the ground.

Items Acquired:
Kanna’s scrolls
The daimyo Hideki’s List of Disaster scroll

Tales of Alternate Rokugans
Session Eleven

The daimyo, Hideo, Omori, Utamaru, and the town monk meet with an informant. The informant, Kikuchi Kama, was one of the miners found in the sinkhole.
Kikuchi claims that he came to this Rokugan after traveling through a number of alternate versions of Rokugan. In the first, Frog’s Crossing was burnt to the ground. In the second, the town was a prosperous fortress. In one he saw the woman who took off the daimyo’s arm talking with a version of himself that still had both arms. Kikuchi claims that the woman was the real version of the woman, but the daimyo was not a real version of the daimyo. The woman and the daimyo were talking about the fate of the tenth kami.
Kikuchi says that he traveled through the alternate Rokugans with the eyeless miner by entering a hole. The eyeless miner, Saito, is such since he saw his death so many times that he took out his own eyes. While Kikuchi entered a hole that was under the town, he exited from another hole that was in the nearby mountains. The hole closed up behind him as he exited.
Kikuchi mentions that to enter the hole one needs to own a special mark. The mark could be on the person as a birthmark or on an item that they own. Anyone else who enters the hole doesn’t survive.
During the conversation, Hideo suddenly goes unconscious. He immediately gains consciousness, but isn’t himself. He tells the daimyo to go through the portal hole in Frog’s Crossing and to take his removed arm with him.
The daimyo finds out that he is talking with Lord Moon. Lord Moon blesses the province and says that if the daimyo travels through the portal he will see ways to prevent bad things from happening to the city. He tells the daimyo that he must take the others that have the mark. One is Hideo and his mark is hidden inside the sheath of one of his daggers. Lord Moon then excuses himself to go for a stroll.
Saito says that he knows Lord Moon, that he met him as he was exiting the hole and after he had removed his eyes so he could “see”.
Omori communes with the spirits to find the other seven people needed to go through the hole.

The next day. Saito wakes up in a barn on some hay with no recollection of the night and butt naked. Next to him is a horse head. He gathers all his possessions together. A secret box of his, that he was told never to open, is cracked open slightly.
Saito climbs to the roof and sees there are two women outside the barn. He then finds out he is covered in blood. He runs to the nearby river and cleans himself off. He then goes to Happu-san for clean clothes.
Kanna is awoken and ordered to find a ronin named Ikuchi. She finds him playing dice in a gambling house in the ronin district. A bar fight is started after Ikuchi finds out some of the guys playing dice were cheating him of all his money. Afterward, Ikuchi agrees to met with the daimyo. The daimyo finds that he has the mark on the bottom of Ikuchi’s foot. It is also revealed that Kanna has a mark on the back of the silk of her sword wrapping and that the wrapping when laid out in a certain pattern also forms a map.

Mass Battle
Session 10

The daimyo gathers people to support the Crab army in an attack against the bandits that have been harassing towns to the south. Kanna leads the archer group.
Hideo and a Hiruma do some scouting work before the rest of the daimyo’s support get to the town that the battle with the bandits will center from.
While out scouting Hideo is captured by the bandits. He successfully feigns being an ignorant drunk. He learns that the group of bandits is quite large and their banner is a serpent being strangled by a monkey. Hideo escapes when the bandits lead him off to a secluded area planning to kill him.
Kanna and the rest of the support troops arrive at the town. Kanna and Hideo advise the town leader on how to prepare for the battle against the bandits.
Battle ensues! The battle goes well for the town and the bandits are defeated easily.

Bandit Attacks
Session Five through Nine?

The daimyo chats with Dragon monks in his audience room.
Kanna hears howling while out training with her sensei. She discovers it is two wolves that belong to bandits who were once a band up near Unicorn lands. The bandits attack. Kanna heads back to town to inform the daimyo. Unbeknownst to her Hideo was also there and was injured by the wolves.
Hideo is healed by Omori.
The bandits attack the town, but the town was well prepared and ready for their attack. The bandits are easily defeated.
Kanna and two monks are dispatched to deliver a message to a town to the south. They are told that there has been a problem with bandits. On the way back from the trip, they run into a Crab army heading north. The Crab army is here to help with the bandit problem.

The Man with no Eyes
Session Four

The man says he’s a miner that was hired by some guy he never saw. He was supposed to be mining for jade. The man is lead back to the daimyo. After more questioning, we find out that he didn’t know there was a town above where he was digging, he doesn’t remember his name, and he doesn’t know about Clans. He was part of an expedition to expand a mine network for Hatsu.
When he looks at the daimyo he says he sees a map. When he looks at Kanna he says he sees a blur. The daimyo has a box brought to him. The man says he sees an arm with a strange design on it. The map that he sees points to something, but he’s not sure what. He says he was supposed to tell Kanna something and he calls her the daughter of the tenth.
The daimyo has heimin make signs warning of the unstable tunnels. In the barrels that were brought up from the tunnels, he finds they are filled with jade, copper nuggets, silver, and gold. The daimyo has them taken to Happu-san.
The ronin, Koebi, is given a room.

Oni in the Forest
Session Three

Saito and Kanna head into the forest. The daimyo orders some bushi to follow. Saito and Kanna see a flaming Daku no Oni walking towards the town. Saito tries to slow it down while Kanna finds the bushi. Saito is slained before Kanna can return. When she shows up she has lead Utamaru and the trainees to the fight. They dispatch the oni with some arrows.
Utemaru heads back to town to inform the daimyo of the situation. Kanna follows the monster’s path to see where it came from. Along the way Kanna sees a campfire off to the side of the path. She goes to investigate, but gets caught by a ronin named Koebi. They talk and part ways.
The next day, Kanna continues to follow the pathway. It leads to a grove that used to have trees, but they have all disappeared and the nearby trees have been burnt. There are several paths leading away from the grove. In the center of the grove there is a large stump of a tree that looks to have been purposefully cut down. The stump has gouges in it and is embedded with pieces of jade and a dark stone (obsidian).
Kyoubi shows up in town and works out a deal with the daimyo. Kanna arrives later and reports her findings to the daimyo.
Shosuro Hideo, a new shinobi, arrives in town and offers his services to the daimyo.
Everyone in town hears a loud explosion. A large sinkhole has formed behind the inn and a number of houses are gone. Tremors continue to be felt.
Kanna and the trainees are recruited to go down into the sinkhole. At the bottom they find the wrecked homes and there are four tunnels leading away from the sinkhole area.
The trainees split up to investigate each of the tunnels. Kanna and Utamaru pair up to explore one of the tunnels. Partway down the tunnel they run into two of the trainees whose tunnel intersected with theirs. The party continues further into the tunnel. They finally arrive at a large cavern. A trainee is sent back to report findings and status. Kanna and Utamaru find a doorway to another cavern. Entering they find a room that has open barrels and a raised stone platform which a person is lying down on. When they enter he sits up and turns toward them. The man has no eyes.

The Next Day
Session Two

There is some commotion down at the dock. A Lion ship has arrived to do some trading. Daimyo Hideki and Saito head to the dockyard to oversee the activity.
Shugenja Omori purifies the Daimyo’s house and blesses the town’s temple.
The Daimyo receives a strange and delicious fruit. The next day the Daimyo’s town hall is decorated with black silk.
In the meantime, Kanna has been hanging out at the town’s bushi school and has been observing and participating in some of the lessons. She spends her free time hanging out with the trainees.
A week later a bigger Lion boat docks at the town to complete trade agreements.
While wandering around town, Kanna hears trees crashing and sees smoke coming from the nearby forest. She runs to go inform the daimyo.

The Beginning
Session One

{Year 110. The dawn of the Empire. Scorpion province. Place: A new town in the middle of being constructed.}

Hideki Bayushi, daimyo of this province. Currently overseeing the construction of his town.
Kanna, young ronin. Has been staying in the town for the past two weeks waiting to meet with her sensei.
Bayushi Saito, yojimbo. Vassel to Hideki Bayushi.

In the middle of the night everyone is woken up from an earthquake. We separately exit to the streets to find that there is a fire nearby and a number of houses have collapsed. Hideki and Saito frantically help put out the fire. Kanna calmly helps save people from collapsed buildings. Afterwards, she decides to head back to her room at the inn and get some sleep.
Just after the fire is put out and things start calming down, the provincial captain of the guard comes stumbling out of the forest. He claims that there is a monster within the forest and that it wants to talk with Hideki Bayushi.
Hideki gathers together a group of samurai and heads into the forest to encounter the monster. They follow a trail that ends up leading to the back of the village chief’s house. The door squeaks open as they enter the house.

Kanna wakes up to the noise of the door squeaking open. She finds herself in an unfamiliar room. She is suspended from the ceiling. Her hands bound by chain and her feet tied together by rope. She has been stripped down to undergarments. She sees her belongings off to the side and someone is riffling through them.

Hideki’s group enters and attempts to barge into the room. However, they are caught in their tracks by what seem like strings and are unable to move. A woman approaches and inspects the group. Looking at Hideki, she says that he does not need his right arm and promptly rips it off. She then somehow seals the wound. After some brief questioning, she tells us that she is looking for a map that doesn’t look like a map. She concludes that we do not have it, sets the room on fire, and leaves.

We all struggle to get loose, but are unable to. Luckily, the old monk from the town’s temple walks in. He rushes over and frees Hideki and the rest of the samurai. The fire is put out and Kanna is untied and helped down. She quickly dresses and gathers her belongings.
She heads back to her room at the inn and finds a note left by her sensei. It says he’s left already, he’ll be back in a month, and to stay in the town. Used to this, Kanna decides to leave the town and wander and get back the town before he shows up.

(Note taker fell asleep for a while… some other stuff happened.)

Kanna heads out of the town, but unfortunately runs into her sensei. He sternly tells her to go back. She does so, but is a bit wary of the inn. She builds herself a small camp just outside the town.

Some patrol men from the town’s guard notice that a woman is camping outside town. They head back and inform Hideki. Hideki, determined to capture the woman from earlier, sends three guards out. They try to stealthily capture Kanna. Kanna knocks one of them over and tries to run (she really doesn’t want to be stuck in jail). She ends up being caught though.
Since she isn’t the evil woman that Hideki was trying to detain, he lets her go. Hideki tells the captain of the guard to show her around their facilities and to test her sword skills. The captain has her perform some kata, which she does remarkably. He informs Hideki who offers Kanna an employment opportunity. She decides to think on it.
